About the Book

New Liberalism examines the evolution of Liberalism from its early beginnings to its
potential future incarnations. The author argues that New Liberalism is the next
step in this evolution: the notion that, in order for a society to be maintained
and to evolve, it is necessary to take into account Liberal responsibility to
future generations. There needs to be realignment in understanding that there is
a common humanity that extends to all people on this planet.

"This has not been a good time for liberals. Across the globe various liberal
based political parties have been suffering electoral downturns and loss of core
support, squeezed by the forces of bipolarism. That is why it is refreshing
to read Matthew Kalkman's New Liberalism, both because of his obvious commitment
to liberal principles but also because he puts a new liberal lens on contemporary issues.

I was particularly struck by his strong case for liberals to take on the cause of freedom
for future generations what he calls a "timeless” concept of freedom. The corollary to
that concept is the need for a more creative, innovative state that defines its powers
in relation to global, cross border issues climate change and terrorism.

This is certainly a book to be read by those who still are motivated by a liberal
sensibility and want to engage in the renewal of liberal policy and practice in a global
environment."

Hon. Lloyd Axworthy
former Minister of Foreign Affairs
Nobel Peace Prize Nominee

"Broad in scope, this clearly written short book offers a strong defense of the need for a
more defined and updated concept of “positive freedom” and describes an intriguing
framework for the role of the state in supporting rights and responsibilities that, crucially,
extend to future generations. A nice review of classical liberalism and social
liberalism with a well articulated, if sweeping framework for what “New
Liberalism” ought to offer. I particularly appreciate the attention paid to the
issues posed by climate change, fiscal irresponsibility and global
inequality—these are probably THE most important challenges in our world today,
along with better governance.

Professor Anne Pearson

Granddaughter of the former Prime Minister of Canada

"With pleasure, I recently had the opportunity to read "New Liberalism" by Matthew
Kalkman. His concept of timeless freedom is of much interest to all who want an
effective, compact state which is characterized by free, empowered citizens who
have the possibility to shape their own futures. The state must make the pursuit
of happiness a possibility, but not a guarantee. Liberalism brings together the
free market on the one hand and free society, civil liberties, human rights, the
rule of law, and democracy on the other. They are different sides of the same
coin and cannot be separated. New Liberalism builds upon this idea. It is a must
read."
